Baptism of Infants and Children through age seven.

We welcome and congratulate those families wishing to pass on the faith to their children through the sacrament of Baptism.  In preparing for the sacrament there is a workshop for parents which will explore the meaning of the sacrament and familiarize you with how Baptism is celebrated today. A workshop is held quarterly in the office of religious education.  Contact the Director of Faith Formation for a class schedule. (734-5033 Ext. 22)

A date for the reception of the sacrament will be set after Baptismal preparation is complete.  Under normal circumstances the sacrament is celebrated with the parish community at a regular weekend liturgy.  Saint Mary parish normally schedules the event on the third Sunday of the month.  A private ceremony, while not the norm, may be scheduled for the sacrament with approval of the pastor and the availability of a priest or deacon. The sacrament of baptism is not celebrated during the season of Lent, with the exception of emergencies.

Godparents of the child to be baptized are to be practicing Catholics.  Please contact the Director of Faith formation prior to selecting godparents for your child.  The parents can request that one of the witnesses (godparent) be of another faith.  (That would mean that the Catholic is a godparent and the second person is a Christian witness.)  If the Godparents/Christian witnesses are not from this parish, they will need letters of good standing from their parish before the Baptism can be scheduled.

The Parent/parent’s of the child being baptized are to be practicing Catholic/Catholic’s registered in Saint Mary Parish for a minimum of three months prior to the child’s baptism.  If the child to be baptized is from outside the parish, a letter from the pastor of the family’s home parish will be necessary.  That letter should state that the family is active and has taken a baptismal preparation class in that parish.

If you have attended a Baptism workshop within the past three years at Saint Mary Parish you need not repeat the session.  However you will still need to contact the Director of Faith Formation for a packet that must be filled out prior to scheduling your child’s Baptism.

To register for the Baptism preparation class please contact Deacon Webster James at 734-5033 ext. 22 .

We here at Saint Mary parish are excited about sharing this special moment in your families on going faith development and pray that you will be enriched by your experience.
